Behind the scenes with Entity

An insight into the Man behind the decks

1)Take us back to the beginning — what first drew you into the world of drum and bass and jump up music?

"The first ever DnB song I heard was ‘Slam‘ by Pendulum. I didn’t even know it was drum and bass at the time but I loved it. The exact moment I fell in love with drum and bass was at Reading Festival after my GCSE’s, hearing Bou drop Magic Carpet, that moment was what inspired me to start making DnB music"

2)Was there a turning point when you decided to seriously pursue music as more than just a passion?

"Probably during lockdown. I was making rap beats and selling sample packs at 14 years old and making a decent bit of money on the side and that was when I realised I could try and chase it as more than just a hobby"

3)Every artist faces challenges — what’s one major hurdle you've had to overcome in your journey so far, and how did you get through it?

"Honestly the lot. Comparing yourself to people and the feeling of rejection was probably my biggest issue at time and it can be really disheartening but you’ve got to remember  everyone’s at different parts of their journey and you never know when yours is going to take a turn for the best"

4)There’s a raw energy in jump up and DnB — how do you channel that in your sets or your production?

"I want to create a journey in my sets and try to capture the energy as best I can but also invoke those emotive moments, so like big trance esque breakdowns and emotional floaty vocals and then building that energy back up into big drops. I love to close with a few more melodic chilled back numbers to make the next artists opener feel more energetic and also to have an emotional moment with the crowd"

5)What’s been one of your proudest moments so far — a gig, a release, a message from a fan that stuck with you?

"I'd be lying if i didnt say CruClash London. Even though it was an opening set, the room filled up within 20 minutes, the crowd was engaged and vocal, and they reacted perfectly. And honestly, the atmosphere and feeling that room and crowd gave me hasn't been beaten yet"

6)What does collaboration mean to you — especially with other creatives like in this clothing drop?(How does the visual side of things connect with your sound?)

"Collaboration is a very important side of anything artistic , because everyone sees creativity differently and I believe that your creativity is a melting pot of all your influences, so collaborating with other creatives is always interesting and you can get a kind of insight into how their brain works"

7)When people hear your name or your music, what do you hope they associate it with?

"That’s a tough question. I’d hope quality, and honestly I’d hope my music makes people feel something. Whether that be like happy, sad, or even angry for the skattier stuff. My main aim for music is to make people feel something or at least heighten their emotions, I mean that is the job of music isn’t it?"

8)Looking ahead, what’s something you're chasing — a dream gig, a goal, or just a feeling you're trying to reach?

"Dream gig without a doubt I'd have to say Rampage Open Air main stage, or any major festival really. I’ve got my first festival coming up in June and I can’t wait for it. Goals wise, I want to leave a legacy of some sort, it’s quite a big goal and obviously not a short term one, but I’d love to leave a lasting impact on the scene, or maybe start a trend of some sort"

9)If you could speak to your younger self when you first touched the decks, what would you tell them now?

"Learn to beat match by ear haha. But no, I’d say just stick at it and enjoy it, at end of the day if you love what you do you’ll do what you love"

10) Is there a message you'd want to leave with anyone reading this who's also trying to break through in music or any creative field?

"Just enjoy yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in the world of analytics, labels and numbers, but at the end of the day art is about expression, and if your art is expressive, eventually it’ll resonate with the right group of people"
